Join Nancy Warner of The Last Resort Wildlife Rescue as a featured speaker in our Pet Parent Lecture Series, hosted at the West Milford Library. Nancy will discuss the local wildlife species living alongside us, offer practical tips on how we can support and coexist with them, and highlight everyday actions that may unintentionally harm these animals. Don McGowan, a retired IT executive, oversees and coordinates outreach volunteers for The Seeing Eye’s Pennies for Puppies and Dollars for Dogs programs. He will share the ins and outs of being a Foster Puppy Raiser, along with heartwarming stories of how these remarkable puppies enhance lives—from their temporary foster families to their future partners in independence.
For over 30 years, our doctors and pet care team have proudly veterinary care to Seeing Eye and Guiding Eye puppies in our community. We hope to inspire local families to step up and open their homes to these puppies, helping teach house manners, basic obedience, and socialization in everyday environments—from shopping trips and car rides to airports and airplanes.
If you’ve ever considered fostering a future guide dog, this is an event you won’t want to miss! (And you might get to meet a pup or two!)

Meet Our Extern !

Amber holds a BS in Biochemistry from Sweet Briar College. While she initially pursued a career in human medicine, Amber ultimately decided to follow her passion and transitioned to veterinary medicine, where her love for animals and science intersect.
Her journey into veterinary medicine began with an internship at Andover Animal Hospital. Currently, Amber is completing her CVT training at BCCC which she expects to finalize this spring. During her time with us, she aims to enhance her surgical skills and gain hands-on experience with our state-of-the-art in-house laboratory equipment.
Amber’s career aspirations is to secure a veterinary technician role at an equine practice, aligning with her lifelong love of horses. She is an avid equestrian and actively competes in Dressage.

Valentine's Day Puppy Pie

Ingredients for Pie Crust:

• 3/4 cup flour (preferably whole wheat or a mixture of all purpose and whole wheat)
• 1/2 cup oatmeal (minced if you do not have a food processor)
• 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce (I just used one snack sized container)
• 3 - 4 Tbsp water

Instructions:

• Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
• Spray muffin pan with a dog friendly cooking spray.
• Mince oatmeal with Slap Chop or similar
• Combine oatmeal and flour in a bowl.
• Slowly add applesauce, while mixing.
• Slowly add water until a ball is formed (adding too much will cause the dough to become sticky).
• Roll out the dough.
• Cut out circles ideally about 4" in diameter. I did not have a circle cookie cutter, so I used the end of my mincer. I also used all the dough (rolling it out several times), so I was able to get 16 slightly smaller circles.
• Press the circles into the muffin pan.
• Bake for about 8 minutes.
• Remove from oven and let crusts cool in the pan.
• Remove crusts from pan when cool.

Fillings:
Filling ingredients can include: minced meat (beef, chicken, pork), pumpkin, mashed carrots or sweet potato, chopped boiled eggs, unsweetened plain greek yogurt etc.
For some red color use: raspberries, strawberries, or even red bell peppers.

Valentine's Day Kitty Cake

Ingredients:

• 1 - 5 ounce can white albacore tuna in water with no salt added
• 1/2 cup finely diced cooked chicken
• 1/2 cup pure sweet potato puree
• rice flour, optional
• mashed potatoes for frosting, also optional

Instructions:

• Line a small rimmed baking sheet with waxed paper.
• Lock your cats out of the kitchen unless you want them to lose their minds when you open the tuna can.
• Open the tuna can. Drain the tuna of any water, then scoop the tuna into a medium mixing bowl. Flake the tuna into small bits.
• Add the diced chicken to the bowl, then stir in the sweet potato puree, adding just enough to keep the mixture together. You may not need the entire 1/2 cup.
• If your sweet potato is a little loose and watery, add rice flour 1 teaspoon at a time to soak up the excess moisture.
• You can do the fancy chef thing as I did in the photos above and place a 1-inch round cookie cutter on a plate, then scoop the mix into the cutter, smoothing it to the edges. Lift the cutter and voila! You have a perfect little round of “cake.”
• If you're dying to be fancy and frost the cake... pipe the mashed potatoes with a pastry bag fitted with a large piping tip, or you can just dollop a bit on top.
  Not all cats like mashed potatoes but it will look adorable

Notes:
To freeze patties for future festive occasions, pat the patties into 1-inch rounds with the palms of your hands and place on the rimmed baking sheet.
Freeze for 1 hour until solid, then transfer to a ziptop bag or freezer-safe airtight container for up to 3 months.
Thaw in the refrigerator before serving to your little niblets.
