Fleas and Ticks Are Too!
As we welcome the warmer weather, it’s important to remember that flea and tick season is also in full swing. These pesky parasites are more active in the spring, which means your pet is at a higher risk of infestations and the diseases they carry. Preventative care is essential during this time to keep your pet safe and healthy. Make sure your furry friend is up-to-date on their flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives to protect them from these seasonal threats. Contact us today to ensure your pet’s protection as they enjoy the great outdoors this spring!
Don McGowan, a retired IT executive, oversees and coordinates outreach volunteers for The Seeing Eye’s Pennies for Puppies and Dollars for Dogs programs. He will share the ins and outs of being a Foster Puppy Raiser, along with heartwarming stories of how these remarkable puppies enhance lives—from their temporary foster families to their future partners in independence.
For over 30 years, our doctors and pet care team have proudly veterinary care to Seeing Eye and Guiding Eye puppies in our community. We hope to inspire local families to step up and open their homes to these puppies, helping teach house manners, basic obedience, and socialization in everyday environments—from shopping trips and car rides to airports and airplanes.
If you’ve ever considered fostering a future guide dog, this is an event you won’t want to miss! (And you might get to meet a pup or two!)
As our pets age, their needs change. Join Dr. Dawn Fiedorczyk in our Pet Parent Lecture Series at the West Milford Library for an in-depth discussion on how to support our senior companions. Dr. Fiedorczyk will cover everything from managing health issues to providing mental and emotional support, offering guidance on how to make the most of your pet’s golden years. Our goal is to give you as many quality years together as possible. Whether your pet is in their twilight years or approaching them, this lecture will help you navigate their unique care requirements.
At Greenwood Lake Animal Hospital, we ensure your pet has a safe and smooth recovery after surgery, whether it’s a spay, neuter, growth removal, or dental procedure. We prioritize their comfort and well-being every step of the way.
To help ease anxiety and make the experience safer, we give your pet a relaxing “chill” medication the night before and again two hours prior to their procedure. This helps reduce the amount of anesthesia needed, providing a safer and more comfortable experience.
Once your pet is home, it's important to keep them calm and monitor for any signs of discomfort. Be sure to follow the aftercare instructions carefully to support their healing. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
We’re here to support you and your pet through every stage of recovery!
Key Takeaways on Communicating with Your Dog: Looking through their eyes
Last month, we had the pleasure of hosting Vince Rambala, a dog trainer from Oakland, NJ, for an insightful lecture on improving communication with our dogs. Vince covered several valuable points that can help strengthen the bond between you and your pet.
One key takeaway was “Doing Nothing is Doing Something.” Vince explained that not responding to undesirable behavior teaches dogs that such actions won’t get attention, signaling that it’s not acceptable. It’s a simple but powerful way to guide your dog’s behavior.
Vince also introduced us to the concept of “Your Dog’s Love Languages”—different ways dogs express and receive affection:
A highlight of the session was Vince’s emphasis on being your dog’s leader. Dogs trust and feel safe when they see you as their leader, and this trust creates security. Vince stressed that “Positive Action should be consistent and predictable,” as it helps build that sense of security and leadership.
Lastly, Vince discussed how understanding your dog’s brain can impact how you train them. Dogs have Left Brain (analytical, takes direction) and Right Brain (conceptual, intuitive, creative) traits, and recognizing which side of the brain your dog tends to use can help you tailor your training techniques to their natural learning style.
We hope this recap helps you understand your furry companion a little better. Thanks to Vince for sharing such valuable insights, and we look forward to hosting more educational sessions in the future!
