Although we love seeing you, nothing puts a damper on holiday cheer like a pet who's suddenly been added to the naughty list for partaking too much. As you deck your halls this season, please keep the following safety tips in mind:
Candles, lanterns, menorahs: Never leave a pet unattended with a lit flame, as their curiosity could result in injury to themselves or a fire.
Christmas trees: Trees can tip over if pets climb them or play with lights and ornaments. It's best to display your tree in a corner, blocked off with a fence or baby gate. Additionally, tree water additives are dangerous to pets. DO NOT add aspirin, sugar or chemical solutions to tree water if there are pets in the home.
Broken ornaments: Shards can cause lacerations and esophageal or intestinal blockage if ingested. Especially keep homemade ornaments (those made from salt-dough) and those made from food-based materials out of pets' reach.
Tinsel and ribbons: Glittering strands are tempting to pets and can cause intestinal blockages that sometimes require surgery if ingested. Avoid using any string-like decorations, including curling ribbon.
String lights: Bulbs can get hot and cause serious burns if pets chew on the cords.
Holiday plants: Pine, balsam, mistletoe, holly, cedar, amaryllis and Christmas cactus are some of the plants that are dangerous and even poisonous to pets. A full list can be found here.
